Five minutes with...Tre Dallas.

Hello lovelies!

Happy Sunday! Today I'm bringing you a new interview with makeup artist/stylist/fashion expert and BYS cosmetics ambassador, Tre Dallas!

Tre and I at the BYS event a couple of months ago.

In case you haven't heard of him before, Tre is a man of many talents. Of Thai descent, Tre has lived in Australia for about 26 years, out of which, 17 years have been spent working in the beauty and fashion industry. Tre started off living in Perth, Western Australia, where he studied fashion, makeup application and art (painting) before he decided to take the next step in his career by moving to Melbourne, which had more interesting opportunities to offer, career-wise.

1) Hi Tre, welcome to The Made Up Maiden blog, thanks so much for taking the time to sit down and answer a few questions for us! You wear quite a few hats, what's your favourite role, and why? Makeup artist, hair stylist or fashion stylist?
Hmm, tough one but I think I'd have to go with Makeup Artist. It's always been my first love, career wise, and it's also the area that I have the longest experience in!

2) Have you got any 'signature Tre' makeup tips for us?
I love beautiful, flawless skin, that's such an important step to take, your base really has to be flawless as it's the foundation of your makeup. Remember the 80s? It was a decade for caked up makeup! I'd say that I spend 60% of the time perfecting the base for every makeup look. I always suggest using a good moisturiser, following with a primer, and finally finishing with a good quality foundation.

3) What's the one product that you think all women should have in their makeup collections, and why?
Eyeliner! Just a basic black, kohl pencil works wonders, you can use it to create endless varieties of looks!

4) What are some of your favourite brands?
For makeup, I'd choose NARS, BYS, of course, and Smashbox.
When it comes to fashion, I'd suggest Bonds, Basic and Dior!

5) What are some of the current fashion trends you think are completely workable in real life?
I really love sixties fashion, think statement jackets, in a gorgeous emerald or black, teamed with lots of liquid liner in a sexy cats eye flick.

6) Name three products you think deserve 'Holy Grail' status and why?
Three products, that's tough. I'd go with the NARS Sheer Glow foundation, it gives you that luminous finish. I'd also suggest Stila All Day Liquid Eyeliner, it really lasts, and BYS glitter nail polish for a touch of glam.

7) What's a common makeup/fashion mistake you see many women making (you can choose which you'd prefer to address)?
Ladies, always check your foundation shades with the change in seasons. We are naturally paler in winter and more tanned in summer, so what suits you in summer won't necessarily fit you in winter, and vice versa. I'd really recommend going to a makeup counter and getting colour matched, be sure to communicate your preferences (do you like matte, luminous, powder, liquid, etc) so you're sure to get something that you really enjoy using and suits your skin well. When it comes to fashion, always make sure that your clothes are fitted, even if your weight fluctuates a little either way. Baggy clothes are not flattering on anyone!

8) Who are some of the celebrities that you really enjoyed working with?
I've been fortunate enough to work with so many lovely celebrities. If I really had to choose just one person, I'd suggest Lindy Klim, she's an amazing and very talented woman! I absolutely love her style, she's a mum and she's very healthy and relaxed. She's also amazingly versatile, she looks gorgeous in anything from Converse runners to the most glamorous high heels!

I asked Tre if he had any advice to offer anyone who wanted to get started in the industry, and his advice was to go to a good school to pick up the basics, after which, it was good to apprentice with a skilled makeup artist to build up training and skills. Tre himself draws inspiration from Henry Matisse, the artist, and credits working with some very talented makeup artists like Napolean Perdis, as well as artists from MAC and NARS in his earlier years in the industry.

I hope you enjoyed getting to know Tre, and picked up some great makeup and fashion tips from him!

You can follow Tre on InstagramTwitter and on his new website, which launches soon!

Much love,
MM.

My Top 10 Favourite Nail Art Manicures - A Walk Down Memory Lane.

Hello lovelies!

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend! I realised today that I’ve been blogging here at The Made Up Maiden for just over 1.5 years, which amounts to quite a lot of manicures, so I thought I’d celebrate by sharing a post on my top ten nail art looks, starting from the most recent and working my way back to when I first started blogging!

#1 – Wish Butterfly Effect Inspired nail art, because black and gold are two shades I’m very much in love with currently (let’s blame The Great Gatsby for that one).

#2 – Butterfly stamping and taping manicure, because I love butterflies and mixing patterns/designs/shades is just so much fun (not to mention a godsend when you can’t decide what shade to wear)!

#3 – Easter 2013 inspired nail art, because, well, I fell in love with the cute bunny and Easter chick.

#4 – Tiger print nails, because every girl needs to walk on the wild side every now and then! Plus, I was really proud of my stamping efforts when it was only my second (or maybe third) time using a stamping kit!

#5 – Valentine’s Day 2013 nails, because they were so simple, yet ended up attracting so many compliments!

#6 – Dripping blood manicure for Halloween 2012, because I love a bit of ‘gore’ every now and then.

#7 – Spiderweb inspired manicure for Halloween 2012, because this is the only time seeing a spider put a smile on my face (or spiderwebs, for that matter). Cute on nail art, terrifying in real life.

#8 – Marc Jacobs Dot perfume inspired manicure, because I’m completely in love with the gorgeous perfume bottle (but then again, I’m in love with all his perfume bottles).

#9 – Saran Wrap nail art, because it’s a nail art tool everyone has in their pantry!

#10 – Valentine’s Day 2012 nails, because it was a simple adaptation to the classic French manicure, yet managed to capture the spirit of the occasion!

I hope you enjoyed my recap post, lovelies, I had quite an enjoyable time strolling down memory lane. The quality of the photos in some of the older posts really made me cringe, but on the positive side, it makes me feel like I've learned a lot since my early blogging days! Onwards and upwards, I say!

Which nail art manicure was your favourite of all of these? Let me know if you fancy a tutorial for any of these!

Much love,
MM.

Product Review: Bobbi Brown Limited Edition Sea Pearls Shimmer Brick Eye Palette (and swatches).

Hi lovelies,

Happy Friday!!! Gosh, it's been a busy week with birthday dinners, farewell dinners and finally, going to watch Superman today! It's a pretty good movie, it started off very well but did get a wee bit draggy in the end. Overall though, I really enjoyed it!

Getting back to beauty blogging; I've got a gorgeous product to show you today, and that's the lovely new shimmer brick eye palette from the latest, limited edition (there are those dreaded words again) Sea Pearls collection from Bobbi Brown. As you know from my last review, I absolutely love my shimmer bricks (I've found my bronze shimmer brick and am really getting a kick out of giving my skin a bronzy glow during the cool winter months)...but I was especially excited to receive a shimmer brick meant for eyes!

The Sea Pearls shimmer brick eye palette is seriously stunning. Handmade in Italy, the sleek, mirrored black packaging is compact and tidy, fitting neatly in the palm of your hand (which means that it's very travel friendly). You get ten iridescent and sheer pastel shadows in the compact, all of which were inspired by under sea hues.

Bobbi Brown Limited Edition Sea Pearls Shimmer Brick Eye Palette

The shades range from neutrals to soft yellow, green, blue and pink pastels. All the shades in the rainbow, really!

My personal favourites have to be (going left to right), the 1st, 5th, and last three shades.

Bobbi Brown Limited Edition Sea Pearls Shimmer Brick Eye Palette

All ten shades appear quite pearlescent when applied on skin. As the shadows are quite narrow, you'd be best to use your finger (or a very skinny eyeshadow brush) to apply individual shades to your lids.

You can also sweep your finger over several shades to create your own unique look. I also like to swirl a large fluffy brush over the entire palette to highlight my cheekbones.

Bobbi Brown Limited Edition Sea Pearls Shimmer Brick Eye Palette

The shades are quite sheer, but buildable. I applied two swipes for the swatches below. You can also use a wet brush to apply these for added impact, or choose to wear them over a cream shadow as a base. Just quickly, pressing them over a cream shadow really makes the shadows pop!

Pros:
Elegant, slimline design, making it very travel friendly.
Sheer, pastel shades, perfect for those who are afraid to dabble in strong shades.
Ten shadow shades mean an endless variety of looks.

Cons:
Limited edition (sigh).
A little expensive at $99 RRP (although you do get ten shades, which adds value for money).
Not ideal for those who love pigmented shadows.
The shadows are a little narrow, which are not idea for those who love using makeup brushes.

The eye shimmer brick retails at $99 on the Bobbi Brown website, or you can purchase it from Bobbi Brown counters in David Jones and Myer.

Last but not least, I leave you with a view of the entire Sea Pearl collection, which you can also view here. Aren't the glosses and blush gorgeous? Stay tuned for an upcoming post where I show you the limited edition Sea Pearl polish, Pink Pearl!

What do you think of this collection, lovelies? Do you like the look of this eye palette? Does anything else take your fancy?

Much love,

June 2013 Violet Box Review.

Hello lovelies!

Thank goodness that another Monday is done and dusted! I have one last June beauty box to review for you, and that's the very first Violet Box! In case you weren't aware of it, Violet Box are a new Australian beauty box that just launched this month. I became aware of them when they got in touch with me a few months ago, and they were kind enough to send me a box to review.

Violet Box is packaged in a pretty black box, with the name of the box embossed in...you guessed it, violet, in the inner corner. The overall appearance is very stylish, and it would be very easy to pop a little sticker on it and recycle it as a gift box (the environmental conservationist in me is doing somersaults). Still, no matter how pretty a box is, it's the contents that matter, so let's see how Violet Box delivers.

In my June box, I received:

Avene gentle gel cleanser (deluxe sample)

CK One Color Gloss Eyecolour (full sized)

Calvin Klein Sheer Beauty Edt (sample)

John Plunkett Glyco Peel (full sized)

LashControl clear coat control mascara and brow fix (full sized)

Argania 'light' hair oil (deluxe sample)

There was also a couple of discount cards offering a month's free subscription to Charlotte Dawson free yoga tv, complimentary mini makeover from CK One and $5 off LashControl mascaras.

On to photos...

The first ever Violet Box! Exciting times!

Contents of the first ever Violet Box.
L-R: John Plunkett Glyco Peel, CK One gloss eyecolour, LashControl
clear mascara, Avene gel cleanser, Argania hair oil and
Calvin Klein perfume sample.

L-R: Calvin Klein perfume sample, CK One gloss eyecolour, and

Calvin Klein gloss eye colour in Spin.

So what did I think of the launch box?

There's no doubting that it's excellent value. Every subscriber received the same items, with the exception of the shades of the Gloss eyecolour received. I have seen some pretty silvery-white, blue and green shades floating around, but this gold is a versatile one that will come in handy for highlighting the brow bone or inner eye corner. With everyone receiving the same items, there is less likelihood of 'box envy'!

I'm actually excited to try the glycolic peel as it sounds very intriguing, I'm just a wee bit afraid that it's going to freak my skin out. Only one way to find out! The other product that I'm very excited to try is the clear mascara, the theory is you squeeze the middle of the tube as you pull the wand out, which then deposits the right amount of product on the brush. This way you don't have to pump the wand in the bottle, which minimises the likelihood of clumping, etc. You can either use it alone or on top of other mascaras as a sealant, and it is supposed to wash off with warm water.

I do believe that I received a vial of the perfume in another recent beauty box, but I do love perfume vials so I'm always happy to receive these. I'm a big fan of hair oils and I've never tried this brand (or heard of it, for that matter), so I'm pretty keen to give it a go. I like that this is the 'light' formula and is unlikely to weigh my thick hair down.

The Avene sample is probably the item I was least excited about (nothing against Avene, just a bit weary of seeing the brand in every beauty box), until I realised it was a gel cleanser, and would be perfect for using with my Clarisonic! Can't wait to give it a go as I'm always looking for the perfect cleanser to use with it.

Verdict? I really liked this box!

I have heard many of my readers and fellow beauty lovers say that it will be interesting to see what the next Violet Box will be like. The general consensus is everyone is quite happy with the launch box, but some sceptics believe that the first box is always the best, so only time will tell! Stay tuned!

You can sign up to Violet Box by clicking here, or stalk their Facebook page here. The box costs $22.95 on a monthly subscription, or you can purchase a three month subscription at $66, a six month at $130 or an annual at $250.

There you have it, lovelies! Does this box tempt you? Do you prefer when every subscriber gets the same items or do you like it when the boxes vary in contents?

Much love,
MM.

NOTD - Wish Butterfly Effect Inspired Nail Art.

Hello lovelies!

Happy Saturday! We made it to the weekend, woohoo!

Have you heard of Wish before? Wish is a gorgeous clothing brand by a very talented Australian designer, Annette Cannock. I love their designs as they are very classy and stylish, featuring attractive prints, lovely fabrics and the hottest shades! I was recently approached by Wish and challenged to create a nail art look inspired by one of the designs from the latest collections, Butterfly Effect. Naturally, I was thrilled to participate, and set about trying to choose one favoured design out of the many stunning ones available (no easy task, I assure you)!

After much deliberation, I settled on the design below for two reasons; firstly, I've been massively into black and gold combinations lately as it's a very chic pairing that complements my skintone, and secondly, it's a design that would fit in beautifully with the Great Gatsby theme, something that is very 'in' right now!

(Image captured from the Wish Catalogue)

Here's what I came up with. I did this look with the help of striping tape. The nail art on my middle finger and pinky finger are inspired by the gorgeous dress, while the nail art on my index finger and middle finger are inspired by the model's shoes. I included it because I think the perfect dress should always be complemented with fantastic shoes (and strappy heels are always a great match in my book).

I hope you enjoyed that, lovelies! Don't forget to check out the Wish page, there are some truly beautiful clothes on offer!

Much love,
MM.

May and June 2013 Lust Have It Review.

Hello lovelies,

I received my June Lust Have It box on Monday, and I wanted to share with you my thoughts on what I received. Before I talk about the June box, though, I'm going to quickly summarise my thoughts on the May 2013 box. I didn't review it as I received it just as I fell sick, and what with all the dramas I've been having lately, I just didn't have time to review it before the June box landed on my doorstep.

In the May box I received:

Nicole by OPI textured polish in Aquamarine (full sized)

Nude by Nature Papaw ointment (full sized)

The Natural Source Camoflage Colour lipgloss in Wild Orange (full sized)

Seacret Body Lotion in Ocean Mist (full sized)

Paula’s Choice Resist Wrinkle Repair Retinol serum (deluxe sample)

Eleven Miracle Treatment (deluxe sample)

That's four full sized items, and two deluxe samples. I was pretty happy with the box as I love polish, happy to try out the gloss (which I was glad to see is an interesting shade), and always wanted to try the NBN papaw ointment. I've heard good things about the serum, and I love hair treatments so was happy to receive the Eleven sample (which, by the way, I absolutely loved). I think most people were pretty excited with the May box (although I'm not sure if it's because of the fact that there were 4 full sized items in there, or if it was for the actual items included in the box).

May 2013 Lust Have It Box.

Now, let's move on to discussing the items in the June box.

As per norm, it arrived in a pretty paisley box (does anyone else find the boxes keep falling apart? I think the manufacturers need to use better glue).

June 2013 Lust Have It Box

I opened it to find an easily identifiable card, and surmised it would be Great Gatsby themed.

June 2013 Lust Have It Box

In my box, I received:

Batiste dry shampoo in Cherry (deluxe sample)

Pure Fiji Hydrating body lotion sample bottle (deluxe sample - the card says Ocean Mist but I received Coconut)

Real purity regal red lipstick (deluxe sample)

Savi Organic Soothing Cream (deluxe sample)

Klara Waterproof eyeliner (full sized)

OPI Pure Lacquer Nail Apps (full sized)

There was also a disposable lip brush from Crown Brush.

L-R: OPI nail apps, Batiste Cherry dry shampoo, Savi organic soothing
cream, Klara black eyeliner, Real Purity lipstick sample and
Pure Fiji coconut body lotion.

What did I think of this month's box items?

I've been curious about the OPI nail apps, so I'm happy to give them a try to see if they are any different from the ones other brands offer. I've been hunting down that Batiste cherry dry shampoo for what seems like forever (to no luck, can't seem to find it on sale anywhere!), so I was really happy to see it in the box. I can't live without dry shampoo, and Batiste is my favourite dry shampoo brand, so this comes in handy. I also like the look of the lipstick pot, which appears to be more balm-like than lipstick in texture (I'd have preferred a mini lipstick but the streamline pot is perfect for slipping into your purse for a night out). Black eyeliner is the shade I wear the most often, so while it may not be particularly exciting, it's certainly practical and I welcome the chance to try a new brand out that I'd never heard of before.

Frankly, not super excited about the Pure Fiji coconut sample, I've received this in a previous box and only just got around to using it up, but I can live with that. The Savi cream is interesting, it's an organic, medicated cream, and apparently it's meant to be used on problem areas (think Eczema, Psoriasis, Tinea, lesions, etc), so I presume you can use it on your face and body. The inclusion of the Crown disposable lip brush is a bit odd; a retractable brush might have been a better option but I can see how it goes with the lippy pot quite well.

VERDICT? I actually really liked this box. Two full sized items, plus two samples that I'm very keen to try make it excellent value in my book. This box, however, seems to have incurred quite a bit of wrath among LHI subscribers, with some comments that it fails to live up to the standard of the May box, and other comments on the low 'value' of this box.

My line of thinking is as follows: I am signed up to a beauty box subscription for the purpose of trying new things every month. Personally speaking, if I'm interested to try one or two of the items in the box, it fulfils the reason I'm subscribed in the first place. I would also rather receive deluxe samples that I'm happy to try, rather than full-sized ones I'm not interested in. There is also an enjoyable air of suspense when your mystery box arrives each month, not to mention the glee when you find a product inside that you're excited to try.

I can understand how some subscribers feel a bit let down with the June box after the May box, but I think it's a bit unrealistic to expect so many full sized items in each box. I know that paying up $20 a month for a box can really add up, but when you take into account the cost of shipping and the cost of cosmetics in Australia, $20 does not stretch very far in terms of products purchased, so it's not quite reasonable to assess the value of a box in terms of how many full-sized items are in it. 'Value' can be considered in two ways, the retail worth of the product, versus the actual benefit you are to gain from it (benefits from actually using the product against giving it away or letting it collect dust in storage).

If, on the other hand, you have been subscribed for long enough that the samples are piling up faster than you can use them, and/or you are no longer excited at the thought of trying new things, then by all means drop your subscription, and save the money towards something you really want instead (we've all been in that position, *cough*Bellabox*cough*). It can be a loaded dice, particularly with different boxes containing different things (box envy can be a terrible feeling to have), but you must also consider that the items in each box may not always suit your preference; that does not, however, mean that the next box won't be more to your liking. One (wo)man's meat is another (wo)man's poison, and all that.

I hope I haven't put you all to sleep with the last couple of paragraphs. Bottom line, if you have lost interest in your subscription, it's easy enough to drop it and move on with your life. Life's too short to get all wound up over a sample box subscription. :)

What did you think of this month's box? If you're keen to subscribe, you can get $5 off your subscription (yes, that's ANY subscription, including the Men's box and the Eco box) by entering the code MAIDEN. If you're subscribed, let me know what you got, I'd love to hear it. :)

Much love,
MM.

June 2013 Wantable Review.

Hello lovelies!

I have an exciting post to share today, and that's a new subscription box, Wantable, that I came across while reading forums on Beautyheaven! Another subscription box, you say? What's unique about it? Well, Wantable is unique for three reasons; it's solely makeup-specific (although there is also a jewellery-specific box option for those of you fashionably inclined), it's based in the US (so you get access to foreign brands), and it's a premium box (they are all full sized products)!

When you sign up, you get to fill out a tailored, comprehensive profile with loves, likes and dislikes for just about every product you can think of (think eyeshadow, lipstick, lipgloss, pencils, mascara, polish, brushes, etc). You can even choose between textures (glitter/shimmer/matte), and Wantable guarantee that you will never receive products you dislike. Each box contains 4 - 6 full sized, hand-picked items to suit your chosen preferences. The June box was designed with input from Lara Eurdolian, the editor of Pretty Connected.

Now, I know many of you have said that you wish there was a makeup specific box, so when this came across my radar, I knew I had an obligation to all of you to sign up and review it (see what I did there, this is for all of you, not me)!

I received a dispatch email on the 8th, and my box was delivered today, the 17th of June. Not too shabby when you think it's coming all the way from the US! What was a bit odd about it was the box wasn't sealed! Usually the boxes are sealed with sticky tape but this wasn't, so it's a wonder that the items inside didn't fall out or get stolen in transit.

On to the box itself...

I opened it to find a slip with my listed preferences, a 'thank you' card from Wantable and a returns paid slip (only applies to parcels mailed within the US). If by some chance you're not happy with your box, you're welcome to send it back to them for a refund, no questions asked, but it's probably a bit silly for us Australians to ship it all the way back to them.

Thank You card and returns paid label.

Thank You card.

You can see a list of my preferences; pink for loved products, blue for liked products and black for disliked products.

My list of preferences.

There was also a list of the individual products in the box, together with pricing details. I was quite impressed by the little tips provided on how to use each product.

Product information, pricing and application tips!

The items were packaged in bubble wrap, which was then wrapped up in tissue paper and buried in paper shavings to prevent damage.

June 2013 Wantable Box

This was buried in paper shavings to prevent damage.

Here's what I received! Everything is full sized unless otherwise indicated.

Face Stockholm Luxe Lash black mascara
Face Stockholm Fantasy cream lipstick (pink)
Cala travel retractable lip brush
Rainbow Honey Pinkie Promise custom blended nail lacquer (pink glitter)
Manna Kadar pressed eyeshadow in Ravish (purple shimmer)
Apothederm serum (sample)

Items in my June 2013 Wantable box.

L-R: Face Stockholm cream lipstick, Face Stockholm mascara
and Manna Kadar pressed eyeshadow.

L-R: Apothederm serum sample and Cala lip brush.

Overall, I'm well pleased with everything I received! There are some great brands that I've heard of but never tried (like Face Stockholm) and brands I've never heard of at all (like Cala and Manna Kadar). I was also quite impressed with the way my preferences were well met, and I only received items I'd have been willing to try.

The Wantable box retails for $36 a month on a subscription (which you can cancel anytime), or $40 for a once-off box. An additional shipping and handling fee of $9 applies to boxes shipped to Australia, while boxes shipped to Canada attract a fee of $5. I believe that Wantable boxes are currently only available in the US, Australia and Canada. You can find out more and sign up by visiting their website.

I paid $45 for my box, and a quick Google search has indicated that the pricing listed on the product information slip is quite accurate, so this month's box was worth a whopping $90! I admit that $45 is a little steep to be shelling out every month, but it is quite a lovely thing to treat yourself to, given that you receive so many full-sized products, and as they are tailored to your preferences, you are likely to enjoy using all of them.

Sarah from More Than Adored also received a June Wantable Box, but her box was completely different to mine! Do check out her post to see what she got.

What do you think of the Wantable box, lovelies? Does it strike your fancy? Are you tempted to sign up?

Much love,
MM.
x

PS- If you're planning on signing up, or even creating an account just to have a look at the personalised preferences, I'd love if you could use my referral link! That gives me a few dollars towards a new Wantable box which I will then review for you! So it's a win-win situation, really. :) Thanks in advance! https://www.wantable.com/invite/5655LJre380
