Shanghai Suzy - The Autumn/Winter 2014 Collection.

Hi lovelies!

Have you heard of Shanghai Suzy lipsticks? I love the name; it brings to mind a girl who seems fun, fearless and exotic! The memorable name isn't the only thing interesting about the brand; it specialises solely in lipsticks, and it's based here in Melbourne! Launched exactly a year ago by Melbourne model and former cosmetics marketing executive Joanna Wheaton, Joanna felt there was a need in the Australian market for affordable, high quality lipsticks. Each lipstick by the brand is limited edition, so once it's gone, it's gone for good! On occasion, however, a lipstick may be reintroduced due to high demand.

Eight of the lipsticks I'm about to show you are from the current Autumn/Winter Collection*, which was launched in March of this year, while the last lipstick is a special collaboration with Melbourne singer Gossling. I have heard that the new collection will be released next month, so if you like any of the colours I'm about to show you, hop to it quick before they're all gone!

Let's talk packaging, shall we? I think the jet-black, square tubes with embossed silver labelling are simple, stylish and sexy (if it's not odd to apply that term to a lipstick, I'm not the only one who does that, am I?). The top is stamped with the colour while the bottom has the name printed on it, so it's easy to pick out which one you're after. It also locks together very securely (more on that later), so there's no chance of it accidentally coming apart in your bag and smearing everything with your (limited edition) lipstick! Win!

Can I just say, it's such a pleasure to photograph lipstick tubes that aren't rolling off the surface in all directions! Ahh, the gorgeousness. Prepare yourselves for LOTS of photos!

 Keep reading after the jump!

The first lipstick is the Gossling lipstick. The remaining eight are from the Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection.

The Gossling collaboration lipstick is called the Gossling lippie*, and it's in the Nourish formula, which is moisturising. The remaining eight lipsticks in the Autumn/Winter Collection* are all Matte lipsticks, which are surprisingly comfortable to wear. These are named (in the order pictured below), Miss Sophia Lilac, Miss Amy Baby Pink, Miss Simone Baby Coral, Miss Sarah-Jane Neon Coral, Miss Maxima Burnt Orange, Miss Tegan Cherry, Miss Melissa Hot Pink and Miss Kitty Black Plum. Aren't the names adorable? The shades are very accurately named too, as they match the colours well. My personal favourites are Miss Tegan Cherry and Miss Melissa Hot Pink.

The Gossling lippie - bright coral
Miss Sophia Lilac - soft, rosy lilac
Miss Amy Baby Pink - a blue-toned pale pink
Miss Simone Baby Coral - a pale, peachy coral
Miss Sarah-Jane Neon Coral - a NEON coral (they weren't kidding about the neon)!
Miss Maxima Burnt Orange - a deep orange
Miss Tegan Cherry - a deep, rich, cherry red
Miss Melissa Hot Pink - a deep hot pink
Miss Kitty Black Plum - a deep plum with brown undertones.

Just before we discuss the lipsticks further, here's a photo of the open lipstick tube. As you can see, the packaging latches together very securely thanks to the little notch on the side of the tube.

The Matte lipsticks are not like any other matte lipsticks I've tried, they're surprisingly comfortable to wear despite the formula. The recommendation on the website was to apply 3 thick layers and to finish by blotting lips with a tissue to prevent the lipstick from transferring to your teeth. Truth be told, the Nourish formula isn't much different from the Matte formula; both are really smooth and comfortable to wear. The Nourish lipstick has slightly more slip than the Matte does, but the difference isn't significantly noticeable.

As you can see from the swatches below, the pigmentation of these lipsticks is incredible! Even the paler shades have fantastic pigmentation. With such a great range of colours, there's truly something to fit every skintone.

I was really pleased with the performance of these lipsticks, I wore Miss Tegan Cherry to a party and didn't have to touch up once, even with eating, drinking and talking! While these are comfortable on the lips, the matte formula isn't very forgiving of dry patches, so I did make sure that my lips were in the best condition possible before wearing these, by applying a thick layer of lip balm, and then exfoliating to remove any dry skin. I had no problems with any of the lipsticks except Miss Kitty Black Plum, something about the shade just seemed to accentuate the lines in my lips! It's a common problem I have with darker lipsticks, though, so it might just be me.

I tried my hand at lip swatches for you, please be kind as I'm terrible at lip swatches! Don't be fooled by the changes in my skintone in each photo, the lipstick shade is actually quite true to colour.

One last thing of note, these babies smell just like bubblegum! While it's a scent I don't mind, it might be something to consider if you're particularly sensitive to scents in cosmetics. It's generally undetectable once it's on your lips, so it's really just while applying the lipstick that the scent is noticeable.

Shanghai Suzy lipsticks retail for $12.95 each, or you can score a deal by purchasing three shades and getting the fourth free from the website, which means they work out to under $10 each! Alternatively, you can visit a stockist (listed here) to swatch these colours for yourself! All I can say is, I'm completely addicted now and can't wait until the new collection comes out next month!

Keep an eye on the blog over the next couple of weeks, as I'll be sharing an interview with Joanna, the founder of Shanghai Suzy lipsticks! In my usual interview style, there'll also be a giveaway, so you won't want to miss this!

What do you think of these, lovelies? Have you tried Shanghai Suzy lipsticks before? Are you as in love with the names, shades and texture of these lipsticks as I am?

Much love,
MM.

  6. Oh my hon, this post packs the most fabulous punch - your photography skills are sensational hon, I mean it, these are the best pics I've seen in yonks, and the swatches, oh the swatches, just brilliant. And then there's the luscious lips - darling I can't decide which colour I love the most on you, but I'm leaning towards The Gossling, Miss Sarah-Jane Neon Coral and Miss Tegan Cherry. For me I'd choose Miss Sophia Lilac, Miss Maxima Burnt Orange and Miss Melissa Hot Pink. Such a bargain price too - I think I've been severely enabled lol ♥
