Laura Mercier Mini Caviar Stick Eye Colour Collection Review & Swatches!

Hi lovelies!

I've got a product review to share today on a Christmas set I picked up in part 1 of my birthday haul. I love cream shadows and shadow pencils as they make great eye makeup bases, and are also a great option when you're pressed for time as you just need a swipe across your lids and you're ready to go. All of these are why I couldn't resist getting the Laura Mercier mini caviar stick eye colour collection.

This collection includes six cream eyeshadow pencils in Khaki (dirty green), Moonlight (pewter), Cocoa (chocolate brown), Amethyst (mauve brown), Copper (metallic bronze) and Rosegold (dusky pink gold). Moonlight, Amethst, Copper and Rosegold are quite metallic and shimmery, while Khaki and Cocoa are almost matte in appearance, with just a slight amount of sheen. Each cream shadow is packaged in a handy twist up crayon, which eliminates the need for sharpening.

Keep reading after the jump!

While I purchased mine in Malaysia, I'm going to be discussing everything in Australian pricing as that's probably where most of my readers are from. With this set, you basically get 6 mini shades for the price of 2 full sized shades, as each full sized stick retails for $28 and contains 1.64 g of product, while the mini collection retails at $55 and contains a total of 6 g of product (1 g per stick). That makes this Christmas set excellent value in my book!

The packaging is simple but stylish; the tube clicks together quite securely so you can toss it into your handbag without fear of the consequences.

As shown in the photo below, most of the shades are neutral, which means they all work excellently together. Moonlight, Amethyst and Rosegold are fairly pale shades, while Copper is fairly pigmented, and Cocoa and Khaki are deep contrast shades. All six shades are also quite opaque. I like wearing one of the first four shades over the mobile lid, and then blending Cocoa or Khaki in the outer corner for definition. It's also easy to get a smokey eye going by smudging Cocoa or Khaki over the top lid and just under the lashline, then using one of the other four shades in the inner eye corner as a highlight.

L-R: Amethyst, Copper, Rosegold, Moonlight, Moonlight, Cocoa and Khaki.

In terms of formula, the caviar sticks do feel a little 'wet' on the eye when first applied, particularly in comparison to the other cream shadows and pencil shadows I own. These do set well once they dry, however, and you have ample time to blend before they set. These can feel a little heavy and tacky if I wear them without blending, so I've found that the best way to wear these is to run the stick over my eyelid before blending it out with either a shader brush (if I'm after a pigmented look) or a fluffy brush (if I'm after a more subtle look).

Once set, these shadows stay put all day without creasing or smudging, so it's not even necessary to wear a eye primer underneath. As a result, I think these to be a great option to wear on their own, or as bases for powder shadows. Overall, I give this limited edition collection a big thumbs up, and I heartily recommend you check it out at David Jones stores before it sells out.

What do you think of this collection, lovelies? Does it appeal?

Much love,
MM.

  5. That's a pretty reasonable price for such great minis! I don't know how I feel about needing to blend it every time, though.
