Clinique Pop Liquid Matte Lip Colour + Primer Review (and Swatches)!

Hi lovelies!

I've got a short and sweet review post today on some pretty Clinique lippies to share! The Clinique Pop Liquid Matte Lip Colour + Primer is one of the newer releases in the Pop lipstick line, and is Clinique's response to the latest matte liquid lipstick trend. Like the others in the Pop line, this is meant to have a built-in primer to keep your pout looking freshly applied. You can read my post on the original Lip Colour + Primer here.

The spiel on the Clinique website states:

"Lightweight liquid lipstick covers lips with lush pigment and a modern matte finish. Wears all day. Moisturizing formula with built-in primer provides a smooth, even glide so lips feel as fresh as they look."

First up, let's talk packaging.

The lipstick is packaged in a square tube with a frosted base that lets you easily identify which shade you're picking up. The lid is the classic silver lid that is true to most of the Pop line, and screws on tightly to prevent accidental leakage. The applicator, a teardrop-shaped sponge as seen in the photo below, is great for spreading colour over your lips, but a little unwieldy as compared to the precise application that a doe-foot applicator affords.

Does it deliver on the promise?

Yes, and no.

The formula is lightweight and highly pigmented, however, it has more of a glossy finish instead of a matte one. The texture is also a little thicker than you'd get from a standard liquid lipstick, but settles down nicely after you press your lips together. The lippies are really comfortable to wear, but they do transfer so you'll definitely have to touch up after eating or drinking. The good news is they definitely don't dry out your lips, but the bad news is if you're specifically after a matte lip, these don't quite fit the bill.

I was gifted with Black Licorice Pop (a vampy, deep purple) and Petal Pop (a baby pink), as shown below.

What's my take on them? I actually really like them. They aren't the first liquid lipstick to fail to deliver on a matte finish (I'm looking at the Maybelline Vivid Mattes here) but that's something I can personally forgive as I like how pigmented and comfortable these are. I would definitely purchase these in different shades, or if they were available in a mini Christmas set.

The Clinique Pop Liquid Matte Lip Colour + Primer is available in eight different shades, and retails at $40. You can purchase these directly from the Clinique website, or from standard stockists like Myer, David Jones, and selected pharmacies/online retailers. My advice would be to keep your eye out for a good Gift With Purchase (GWP) deal, as there have been a number of these of late! The GWP packs are adorable and allow you to try out a few more of their products.

What do you think of these, lovelies? Are you a fan?

Much love,
MM.

  1. Why promise to be matte, but not be matte? That's very odd.

    1. Haha, I was thinking of you when I wrote this, Leah!

I have no idea, or they should have just relabelled it as a liquid lipstick!

  3. I've just started getting into more matte lipsticks and crayons but still love some shine, so these might actually be perfect for me!

    1. I honestly don't mind when it's not matte once in a while, because it's so much less drying...and yes, Black Licorice is gorgeous!

  5. Adore both of these colours hon - probably won't indulge at that price point, but I'm far happier with a non-matte lip product, getting too old lol xxx
